Great Removal Tips

home moving articles and tips

We could all use a bit of help when it comes to moving home as there are so many things to think about and do. Every day hundreds of people move home in the UK/US and some get it very right and others very wrong. It is unsurprising that many people find moving daunting as they simply are not well prepared. In a move, as in life, it always helps to be well prepared and so we have written a small list to help you make your dream move a reality.

Make a List

Write everything down and you will thank yourself later for being so well prepared. Before you start to pack even one box, make a note of everything that is going in and where it will be kept. You can do this with a small notebook or on the computer. Keep this list with you at all times and put it in a place with all of your other moving essentials. These essentials should include marker pens and coloured stickers which you can put on each box in a colour coding system. Mark each box very clearly with what is inside and the room for which it is destined.

Get Plenty of Moving Materials

You should always be well prepared and have even more boxes than you think that you will need. After all, the last thing you want to have to do when you are so busy is to be going out to buy yet more boxes! Have quite a few boxes set aside for moving day as you will no doubt need them for bedding, clothes, or items you may have forgotten to pack.

Buy a good roll of duct tape to ensure that all of your boxes are very well secured. Use ink free paper to wrap your goods in as newspaper will often stain your items and may in some cases irreparably damage them. You should also invest in plenty of bubble wrap too, as you don’t want to skimp on protective materials for your fragile items.

Use Wardrobe Boxes

Wardrobe boxes are tall boxes which are perfect for storing your clothing, bedding and curtains. They certainly come in handy when moving odd and long-shaped items for which normal storage boxes simply will not do. Measure all of your clothes roughly so that you are sure how many wardrobe boxes you will need for your removals job.

If you are having trouble finding wardrobe boxes, get in touch with your removals company and they may be able to supply them. Don't make the boxes too heavy to lift, however. Not only will this make the lifting a lot harder but it will also make it a lot more dangerous. This is true of any box that you are filling during the removals process. It is always best practice to pack each box carefully so that these types of injury do not occur.

Use Color Coding

Before you move into your new home, assign each new room a colour. For example, the kitchen could be designated with green and the living room with orange. Then mark each box with the appropriate colour so that you and the removals team will know exactly where each box goes. To help even more, make a sign for the first room in the house to direct the movers to each colour-coded room as it will save a lot of time. It takes a lot more effort to have all of your boxes dumped in the first room of the house only to have to move them all again later.
