Getting the removals van
access to your property
home moving articles and tips
Moving house is full of twists and turns; you will find that the process throws up a great many unexpected problems that will need to be overcome in order for you to have a successful move, and many of them can’t really be prepared for! The only thing to do to ensure that you don’t end up stuck in a mess is to try and think of absolutely everything, and then you will hopefully be close to being able to sort the situation if it arises. Considering the move step by step in your mind is the best way to do this; ensuring that you are in a position where you understand every single twist and turn of the process, and can visualize every obstacle in your way will mean that you know what you are facing for the most part at least.
This can of course mean that you fear that there are many more things to worry about, so it is worth having a conversation with your removals company about what you might be worried about, as well as what they may need to be sure of. One of the main things that you need to consider is how large your removals service van is. Removals vans are very large, and are sometimes not sized appropriately for the needs of certain customers. Have a think about the properties that you are moving things from and in to; is there appropriate parking? Do you have a wide enough access road or street? Will the lorry be able to turn if it needs to? The list goes on, but the premise is the same; will your removals team be able to get their vehicle to your house in both situations?
If you have concerns that such a thing may be an issue, then you should certainly look in to getting some measurements for the lorry itself, and talking to your removals company about how the area may affect the job. If in doubt, get them to do a site visit of the property in question, and see whether they think it will be appropriate for the type of vehicle that they want to use. No one knows the vehicle like the driver, so it is pretty essential that you get good advice from the people that will be doing the job themselves. If you can’t get them out to the property, then at least take a few pictures of the area in question and take some rough measurements so that they have an idea of the scale of the pictures. If the removals company feel like they may have an issue getting their removals van in to the property, then you will be able to talk with them about alternatives.
There are ways in which you can battle these sorts of issues; depending on your move, you can always split the move down from one huge van to a couple of smaller ones. It may mean that the crew are divided between vehicles, and that they can’t sleep in their cabs if they need to do an overnight stop, but in the interest of saving them a long walk with all of your furniture, it needs to be done! Alternatively, you can unload nearer the property and do the last leg of the move with a larger man and van type service, which your removals company will often be able to supply. Always do your research and ensure that you have all bases covered!
