Moving House - What to Pack
In Your Essentials Box

home moving articles and tips

If you have spoken to friends and family about moving home it is very likely that you have heard the phrase ‘essentials box’ a lot during these talks. An essentials box is the last box that you pack and the first box that you unpack when moving home. It should include all the things you will need for the night before you move and anything you will need for the day.

By packing an essentials box you will minimise the need to rummage through boxes looking for things you didn’t realise you needed during your move. Here are some suggestions for what to put in your essentials box:

Bathroom Items

It is a general rule that your essentials box should include all the things you will need for the 24hours during your move. Due to this it is essential you include bathroom products so that you don’t have to run to the shop or open boxes when you realise you have forgotten something. Essential bathroom items are toilet roll, hand wash, tooth brush, toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel, shower curtain, hand towel, any regular medication and any contact lens solutions etc.

Moving home is going to be hot and sweaty work so it is good to make sure you have shower items available so that you can cool off after your hard day. A shower curtain is essential just in case you arrive at your new home and find you are without one!

Kitchen Items

It is important to make sure you have enough food and drink packed in your essentials box to keep you going throughout your move. Essential kitchen items are; washing up liquid, tea towel, dish cloth, coffee, tea bags, toaster, kettle, easy food and snacks. As well as these items it is important to make sure you have enough mugs, crockery and cutlery for each member of your family and a couple of spare mugs in case your removal men would like a cup!

Easy food should be something simple that doesn’t need refrigerating such as pasta and sauce. However, if you plan to make pasta make sure you remember to put a saucepan in your essentials kit.

Other Items

Once you have the kitchen and bathroom items packed it is good to make sure you have packed a change of clothes and a towel per person. As well as this it is also good to pack a radio to keep the boredom at bay, a cutting knife and scissors for unpacking boxes and a portable tool kit. Other items should include cleaning products, bin bags, phone chargers, first aid kit and a torch. If  you pack these items in to your kit then you can be safe in the knowledge that you are covered for most eventualities be it a cut finger or a broken bedframe.

Documents

Last on the list, and possibly the most important, is any important documents and paperwork you need for the move. This will include telephone numbers for your removals company and estate agents as well as any friends or family you will need to contact during the day. As well as these you may want to pack medical records, passports, leases and financial information in to your essentials box. That way you know where all your important documents are in case you need to access them during your move.
